Operation of Hope is a volunteer surgical team that has changed the lives of 1,942 children around the world...and counting.
Each year, Operation of Hope travels to underdeveloped countries each year to perform cleft lip and palate surgeries, as well as other types of facial reconstructive surgery for people in need.
For the last 18 years Operacion of Hope has traveled to Ecuador. The UC Davis Department of Otolaryngology has participated in each of these trips performing reconstructive surgery for children born with cleft lip and cleft palette, as well as children born with an outer ear deformity called microtia. In the past year Operation of Hope has started doing this same mission in Zimbabwe, Africa
Over these 18 years 26 residents, fellows, and faculty from the Department of Otolaryngology have participated in these trips. In addition to surgeons, the trip brings nurses, translators, orthodontists, speech pathologists, and anesthesiologists to help with these surgeries. To date Operacion of Hope has performed 1,942 surgeries.
